ABI Caravans

A Journey Through Five Decades of Innovation

In the heart of East Yorkshire, a legacy of caravan manufacturing has been unfolding for over half a century. ABI Caravans, a name synonymous with quality and innovation in the UK’s leisure vehicle industry, has a rich history that began in the early 1970s and continues to shape the landscape of holiday homes today.

The Birth of ABI

ABI’s story began in 1972 when two rapidly growing names in the caravan world, Ace Caravans and Belmont Caravans, joined forces. Initially christened Ace Belmont International, the company quickly became known simply as ABI, a name that has stood the test of time.

Ace Caravans, founded by Terry Reed in 1962, had already made a name for itself in Hull, producing touring caravans primarily for the Dutch export market. Meanwhile, Belmont Caravans, established in 1963, had been making strides in the static caravan market. The merger of these two successful entities laid the foundation for what would become one of the UK’s leading caravan manufacturers.

Early Growth and Expansion

The 1970s saw a boom in the caravan industry, and ABI was perfectly positioned to capitalize on this growth. From its base in Beverley, East Yorkshire, the company quickly established itself as an innovator in caravan design and manufacturing.

By 1978, ABI Caravans had solidified its position in the market and expanded its portfolio by acquiring Elddis caravans in 1973. This period of growth saw the introduction of popular models such as the St Tropez “Villa,” which pushed the boundaries of holiday caravan design.

Adapting to Market Changes

The 1980s brought both challenges and opportunities for ABI. While the early part of the decade saw economic downturns that affected the industry, ABI responded with new models designed to keep sales moving. The late ’80s and ’90s saw the introduction of ranges such as the Phoenix, Arizona, and Montrose, which helped cement ABI’s reputation for quality and value.

In a significant strategic move, ABI decided to focus exclusively on caravan holiday homes in 2001, discontinuing its production of motorhomes and touring caravans. This decision allowed the company to channel its resources and expertise into becoming an industry leader in the static caravan market.

Innovation and Design

Throughout its history, ABI has been at the forefront of caravan design and innovation. The company has consistently worked to improve both the aesthetics and functionality of its holiday homes. In recent years, ABI has employed young designers to enhance the “kerb appeal” of their units, breaking away from traditional rectangular designs to include more modern, hexagonal-ended models.

Challenges and Triumphs

Like many manufacturers, ABI has faced its share of challenges over the years. Economic fluctuations and changes in ownership have tested the company’s resilience. In 1997, ABI encountered difficulties and was acquired by an American investor, leading to a rebranding as ABI UK.

Despite these challenges, ABI has consistently bounced back, demonstrating the strength of its brand and the quality of its products. The company’s ability to adapt to changing market conditions and consumer preferences has been key to its longevity.

ABI Today

As of 2025, ABI continues to be a major player in the UK’s caravan holiday home market. Operating from its 45-acre site in Beverley, the company maintains its commitment to quality craftsmanship and innovative design. ABI’s range of static caravans, including popular models like the Ambleside, Horizon, and Windermere, continue to offer holidaymakers comfortable and stylish home-away-from-home experiences.

Looking to the Future

As ABI moves forward, it faces the challenges of an ever-evolving market. The company’s focus remains on providing industry-leading caravan holiday homes with a customer-centric approach. With a dedicated team designing, manufacturing, and supporting the production of new models, ABI is well-positioned to continue its legacy of innovation and quality in the caravan industry.

From its humble beginnings in the early 1970s to its current status as a leading manufacturer, ABI Caravans has been an integral part of the UK’s caravan industry for over five decades. Its journey reflects not just the history of a company, but the evolution of British holiday culture and the enduring appeal of the caravan lifestyle. As ABI looks to the future, it carries with it a rich heritage and a continued commitment to creating quality holiday homes for generations to come.
